9 Tricks To Mixing Prints | Hot Spring Trend

March 14, 2018

Mixing prints is risky business and super intimidating, but when you do it right, you will wow everyone around you. It’s actually easier than you think. All you need to keep in mind are a few simple rules. Trust me, after you read my tips and tricks below, you’re gonna have a few ah ha moments. I’m almost positive a lot of you are gonna think, “I already knew that!”  Yeah yeah, let’s keep it real, it’s not rocket science, you just have to be willing to try and be playful. Now take a gander at my tips and tricks that will leave you looking like a professional – okurrrrr!

1 You must have one color in common to tie the look together.

2 Mix prints of different scales/sizes; especially if it’s the same print.

3 Mix two bold prints with a neutral to break it up or tone it down a bit.

4 Wear a belt to break up the patterns and give you a more cohesive look.

5 Treat stripes and leopard print as a neutral. Psst…Stripes look super cute paired with polka dots!

6 Mix the same print in complimentary colors.

7 Mix a tailored/structured print with a more flowy one.

8 Work with inverse colors. For example, mix a black top with white stripes with a white skirt with black stripes.

9 Lastly, an easy rule of thumb is, graphic prints will always work well together.

I’m a huge fan of florals so I knew I wanted to mix em up! Both prints have the colors red, green, blue, yellow and white so rule #1 has been met. The floral print on my romper is smaller in scale to that of my shoes. And I mixed in a neutral accessory to tie the look together even more. What do you guys think? Do you feel like you can pull it off now? I have some serious inspiration below that will that bring to life all the tips discussed above (FYI if you click on a photo it becomes a slider ;)). Hope this was helpful! As always, thanks for stopping by. You guys rock! xx Sarah

I love this post Sarah! Thanks for the trips. Mixing prints looks easy, but sometimes it’s not THAT easy. My rule of thumb when all else fails — maybe a white top with small dots. Very specific I know. Ha ha. And love your outfit.
